Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of some of the questions we get asked most frequently from our patients.

How often should I brush my teeth?

For healthy teeth and gums, we recommend you to brush twice a day at minimum.

What is the proper way to brush my teeth?

Using a soft bristle brush, apply at a 45 degree angle to gumline. Brush gently in short back and forth strokes or circular movements. Using force will break down tooth enamel. Spend at least 2 minutes to guarantee a healthy smile!

What is the proper way to floss?

Wind 18″ of floss around both middle fingers, then pinch floss between thumb and forefinger. Guide floss down through the gap between 2 teeth to the gumlime, then move the floss back up. Repeat these steps thoroughly.

What is plaque?

Plaque is a thin yellow film of bacteria that forms naturally on teeth. Plaque can solidify within 48 hours and cause tartar or cavities. However, daily oral hygiene can easily remove and prevent this bacteria buildup.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bones that stabilizes your teeth. Plaque buildup hardening over time becomes tartar. This early stage of the disease causes the gums to swell and become red. The disease advances into more serious problems such as sore and bleeding gums, pain, and tooth loss.

What are signs of periodontal disease?

  • bleeding gums
  • red, swollen or tender gums
  • gums pulled away from teeth
  • bad breath
  • pus between gums and teeth
  • loose teeth
  • a change in the bite of your mouth
  • a change in the fit of your dentures

How can I prevent periodontal disease?

Daily oral hygiene is the best way to prevent periodontal disease. The key is brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, and a healthy diet.

Why do our teeth turn yellow?

Our teeth turns yellow due to our enamel wearing down through the course of time. The yellow is the core tissue (dentin) of our teeth.

What are the different types of teeth whitening options?

  • In-Office Teeth Whitening
  • Professionally Dispensed Take-Home Whitening Kits
  • Over the counter whitening

How long does teeth whitening last?

Typically, it last from one to three years. Patients usually follow up with “touch up” visits that will prolong the whiteness.

What can I do about bad breath?

Bad breath can be caused by a variety of things such as the type of food you ingest, periodontal disease, and/or other causes. Good oral hygiene and regular checkups will help reduce. Brushing your tongue or cleaning dental/orthodontic appliances regularly will also reduce it.
